Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG) is an operation that serves to create new flow in blocked coronary vessels in order to deliver blood that transports oxygen needed for the work of the heart muscle.
Cardiac bypass surgery or CABG is for patients with blockages in the coronary arteries of the heart, where there is a buildup of plaque or fat in the coronary arteries.
Over time, the plaque builds up and hardens the arterial blood vessel walls causing narrowing and blockage. This disrupts the blood flow to the heart and results in the heart becoming deprived of oxygen and eventually malfunctioning. This phenomenon then triggers myocardial infarction or heart attack.
Heart bypass surgery is not the first treatment option to treat coronary heart disease. In the early stages, your cardiologist will recommend lifestyle changes, taking heart medications, or placing a ring (angioplasty).
1. Angioplasty procedure cannot be performed/failed
2. There are many blockage points
3. The blockage point is in a location that is difficult to reach with angioplasty
4. In patients with comorbidities of Diabetes Mellitus (due to the high potential for re-blockage with ring insertion)
CABG heart bypass surgery takes place in a hospital with adequate facilities and infrastructure with a cardiac surgeon and associated team. The doctor takes a blood vessel that will be grafted to the coronary artery from the patient's hand or lower leg area. The doctor will make an incision approximately 25 centimeters long in the chest and open the breastbone to reach the heart.
There are two processes of heart bypass surgery, namely using a heart-lung machine and without a heart-lung machine. If using a machine, the heart will be made to stop beating temporarily while the doctor makes a bypass to the coronary artery. This is the more common heart surgery procedure.
Whereas without the machine, the heart will continue to beat during the surgery. Once the new grafted artery is in place, the doctor will reattach the sternum using special wires and close the incision with stitches.
After discharge from the operating room, the patient will be cared for by the Cardiac Surgery Team for several days. The team consists of a cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist, cardiologist, intensivist, and medical rehab doctor. The Medical Rehab Doctor will train the patient in cardiac rehabilitation to speed up recovery, which will be continued at home independently.
After returning home, the surgical area should always be kept dry and clean. For this reason, there will be special instructions for bathing. Most patients need to be hospitalized for a week after CABG heart surgery. After that, the patient should consult with the doctor in about 6-8 weeks.
Patients are advised to get plenty of rest during the recovery period and refrain from strenuous physical activities. Usually, recovery from heart surgery lasts for six weeks. The total recovery duration can be up to 12 weeks until the patient can completely return to normal activities.
CABG bypass heart surgery is part of Cardiac Center Persada Hospital's services. In addition to CABG heart surgery, you can also perform heart examinations such as heart electrocardiogram (ECG) examination, heart treadmill test, heart ring installation, and so on.
