Breast Self Check (SADARI) for Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast self-examination (SADARI) is a self-examination method that women should know. This examination is done to find out physical changes in the breast. The goal is to be able to be treated immediately if there is a dangerous condition in the breast.

Unfortunately, there are still many women who do not know how to do SADARI. As a result, many breast diseases are not detected early and end up becoming serious problems. Then, how to check it?

What is Breast Self Examination (SADARI)

SADARI is a method that is done by examining the breasts independently. This method is done to detect any abnormalities in the size, texture, or even shape of the breast. This method can be done to detect breast cancer as early as possible.

Breast cancer is a medical condition that occurs due to abnormal cell growth in the breast area. If not treated early, it can reduce life expectancy and the chances of recovering from the disease are getting smaller.

Therefore, SADARI is very important to do as an effort to detect breast cancer early. This method is done by looking at and palpating the breasts to find out any odd changes in the breasts.

How to do breast self-examination (SADARI)

This examination method is very easy to do. Before having a professional examination at the best hospital in Persada Hospital, you can do it independently in front of the mirror, while taking a shower, or while lying down. The full explanation is as follows:

1. In Front of the Mirror

SADARI examination can be done in front of a mirror. You can stand in front of the mirror while undressing your upper body. Then, follow these steps:

1. Pay attention to the condition of the breasts. Generally, women have breast sizes that are not equally large. Usually, the size of the left breast will look bigger than the right breast, or vice versa.

2. Stand with your arms straight down. Look at the size, shape, skin color, and surface of your breasts. Check for changes or not.

3. Keep your hands on your waist and press hard to tighten the chest muscles. Look carefully at the breasts from the right side to the left, and vice versa.

4. Pin your hands together behind your head and press inward. Take note of the condition of your breasts, including the underneath area.

5. Check whether the nipple is oozing or not. You can do this by attaching your index finger and thumb to the nipple area. Press gently, then pay attention to whether or not any liquid appears.

2. When Bathing

In addition to looking in the mirror, you can also do a breast self-exam while showering. Start by lifting one hand behind your head, then use the other hand to palpate the breast on the side of the raised hand.

1. Make sure that the hand has been soaped to make it more slippery and make the touching process easier. Press each part of the breast gently with your fingers. Do the same steps for the other breast.

2. Breast examination while bathing is quite effective. The foam from the soap will make it easier for your hands to check for lumps or other changes in the breast or armpit area.

3. Lie down

Apart from taking a shower, this breast examination can also be done when you are lying down. It's very easy, you can follow these steps:

1. You can lay your body on a flat and comfortable surface. Place a small pillow under your shoulders. If there is no small pillow, you can use a towel roll.

2. Next, place your right hand under your head. Smear your left hand with lotion, then use your fingers to start feeling the right breast. The movement can be done clockwise in a circular motion.

3. After completing one round of palpation, slide the finger over the area that has not been palpated. Restart palpating in the same way over the entire surface of the breast, including the nipple area.

In this examination process, try to do it calmly and not in a hurry. Make sure all parts of the breast have been examined properly. By lying down, the SADARI examination will be easier because the breasts will expand.

If you find a change in your breast during or after an examination, there is no need to panic. However, you still need to be vigilant and consult with an expert at Persada Hospital.

When and How Often to Perform Breast Self-Examination (SADARI)?

SADARI should be done regularly, ideally every month, a few days after menstruation. For women who are not menstruating, you can choose a specific date each month. This examination should be done at the same time every month to make it easier to remember and do consistently.

It can also be done at ages starting from 20 years old. If you have reached the age of 50 years and above, this examination should be done more frequently. Especially if there is a family history of breast cancer.

Also, keep in mind that SADARI can be done at any time if there are concerns or changes in the breasts. If there are symptoms or changes such as lumps, changes in breast shape or size, unusual pain, or changes in the breast skin, consult a doctor immediately.

When to See a Doctor for Further Check-ups

If you find a lump or other changes during your examination, don't panic. This is because most cases do not lead to serious problems. Out of 10 cases of breast lumps, only 1 turned out to be cancerous.

Even so, you should still be vigilant. So, when should you see a doctor for further examination? That is when you find some of the following symptoms:

1. A hard lump is found in the armpit or breast area.

2. There are changes in the surface of the skin on the breast, such as hollowing or wrinkling of the skin.

3. There is a change in the shape and size of the breast, especially when you lift the breast or when you move your arm.

4. Breast discharge from the nipple, but not breast milk.

5. The nipple of the breast is bleeding.

6. Reddened and moist nipples are found, and the color does not change from before.

7. There is a change in the shape of the nipple, such as inward nipple.

8. A rash is found in the nipple area.

9. There is ongoing discomfort or pain in the breast.

A clinical examination may be needed to determine whether a lump or change in the breast is a sign of cancer or not. The examination performed by the doctor is usually a physical examination as well as supporting examinations.

The supporting examinations include ultrasound, mammogram, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). If suspicion is found from these examinations, the doctor will usually recommend continuing the biopsy examination.
